Kids naturally know how to truly live life. Nobody has to teach them this skill, it is second nature to them. It is us that need to be taught by the children. We need to remember how to be truly alive and then to live that way again.
As I came upstairs I heard the laughter and enjoyment; however, something wasn’t right about it. I came into the living room to discover my 4 year old (Jake) and 2 year old (Cade) with toys and water everywhere. So as every good parent would do, I asked the million dollar question (with much disgust in my tone of voice). WHAT IS GOING ON IN HERE?!? Jake, with a huge smile and all excited about their event said, “we were spitting water on each other and all over the place!” Based on the state of the room, he was not kidding.
After reading them the riot act, I informed Jake he was going to clean this up. (One does not give a Cade a rag to clean up a water mess unless you are okay with him washing the TV, DVD player and stereo.)
As I came back in the room to asses the progress, I was still ranting about the flood. “Guys, this is not an okay activity. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?
With immense passion, a huge smile and total excitement Jake answered with, “WE WERE HAVING FUN DADDY!”
That is when the lesson I was trying to teach Jake ended … and mine began.
Here is what I noticed:
- As a kid it is all about fun. Being in the moment, fully alive and giving 100% of yourself to whatever it is your doing. When did we as adults grow out of this? And more importantly, WHY? This very attitude that kids have is where fulfillment in life is.
- Jake wasn’t phased by the disgusted attitude I brought and the pressure I put on him.I was angry and had been scolding him since I had walked into the room. Yet none of this dampened his spirits. Life was fun and he was alive with it.Why do I allow the pressures of life and attitudes of others to impact how I live? Why do I allow outside circumstances to affect my inner peace?
Thank you Jake and Cade for the reminder to not take life too seriously, but to take truly living very seriously.
