Inspiration and Motivation for YOU!

I have spent the last 18 months as a full time commissioned salesperson. It’s a brand new world for me. Not the profession I expected, but it’s an incredible opportunity, and even in the face of a challenging economy, it offers promise and potential I never expected either.

My biggest challenge has been getting myself out in front of my customers where sales can happen. I’ve been held back by some mysterious resistance that I haven’t been able to name.

Honestly, it didn’t even occur to me that it was fear.

Fear for me has taken a strange place… most likely because between the ages of 18 and 21 I had four close calls with my own demise so real that I felt as though nothing else could ever scare me. I wore survival like a badge. I believed that having lived through that, nothing could ever scare me. After all, what could be more scary than staring death in the face and coming out on the win side?

What I didn’t realize, however, is that I didn’t anymore allow myself the luxury of being afraid of anything… so I convinced myself that I’m afraid of nothing… well, maybe except for snakes… and really tall buildings… and anyone dressed in a gorilla suit…

Inspirational and MotivationalThen last night, one of my friends posted this on Facebook:

“Go to your fears, sit with them, stare at them. Your fears are your friend, their only job is to show you undeveloped parts of yourself that you need to cultivate to live a happy life. The more you do the things you’re most afraid of doing the more life opens up. Embrace your fears and your fears will embrace you.”
-Jackson Kiddard

…and that’s when it hit me, that of course I’m afraid of stuff…
I fear taking the chance to finish the dream garage that remains an unusable shell.
I fear spending a day chasing leads and not getting anywhere.
I fear wasting time.
I fear disappointing my business partners.
I fear disappointing my parents.
I fear disappointing my children.

…and the list goes on, and I’m pretty sure I’m just as fearful of being wildly successful as I am of anything else, because, really, anything outside the comfort zone of our past scares us all at least a little bit.

Then I saw this quote, and I realized fear isn’t something to avoid or deny or to conquer… it’s something to seek out and welcome and to use as a springboard to the next level… just like the failures I have learned to embrace as opportunity.

Today, I am open to fear. I welcome it. I look for it, embrace it, and employ it to guide me.

Today, I stand taller, because I stand on the pillars of fear and failure.

Today, I soar on the wings of fear and failure.

What are you afraid of?

  1. As always, the man you are amazes me Alan! From the day we spent side-by-side hauling buckets of rocks for concrete in Mexico, to our time in Sam Camp together – you continue to be an inspiration!
Fear is definitely my friend! All of the fears I let control me over the duration of my life, that I can look back on and see what they cost me. All of the challenges that I faced and failed to overcome because of the fear of failure, or of looking dumb, or of disappointing someone dear to me.
But those fears are now replaced by only one. The fear of making those mistakes all over again; the fear of not facing the new challenges in my life and of not being the man I was meant to be – the man I want to be.
Today I wecolme those new challenges. Because I know, on the other side of the fear of failure is the glory of success. To live without fear is to hide from life. And I for one would rather stare fear in the face, and live..

  2. What an interesting read & challenge to me! I’ve been learning a lot about the other side of the coin, “LOVE” and your blog reminded me afresh of something written long ago……”There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” I see that the power of fear to punish, is removed when fears are no longer avoided or denied.
Thank you for sharing from your personal journey, and in so doing, impacting the lives of others world-wide.
