Researchers and psychologists have come up with many reasons why we procrastinate and how to overcome these. If you do a search on the Internet for procrastination, you will find more than enough information there. Heck, reading all the how to’s and why for’s is a great way to procrastinate.
There are many excuses given for it and they tend to fall under one of two main categories. Once you’ve identified the reason for your behavior you can then find the insight on how to overcome it and create a new habit.
(Category #1) It is something you don’t like to do.
Like no kidding, if you enjoyed doing it you would have already done it! That is a no brainer. So WHY don’t you like to do it? What are you avoiding? Here are some common excuses, that are often lying in the subconscious mind, and some statements to help you overcome these excuses.
- It is uncomfortable – Your dreams all lie outside your comfort zone.
- Fear of failure (“I’ve failed before and probably will again” “I can’t do it properly”) – There is nothing wrong with making mistakes. That is how we learn. It’s okay to do things poorly while you’re still learning. Failure is not fatal. (unless you are skydiving)
- Fear of disapproval – You will never please everybody. It is only your approval or disapproval that means anything.
- I don’t feel like it – (“I’m not in the mood”, “I need to be in the right frame of mind”, “I’m too tired/stressed/…etc”) Stop waiting for that “perfect” moment. Don’t let your feels determine what you do. Action precedes motivation. Take action and your feelings will follow; once you start something it is then you can really get motivated to get into it.
The Mind Gym: Wake Up Your Mind, suggests that when you have an activity you don’t like to do, make a game of it. Find some way to make it fun. Have rewards for yourself that you get after completing certain steps. Make sure and have a celebration when the task is all done.
